Sons of Sevilla return with their third and most musically assured album to date, the sun-soaked swell of It Could Be Today. To give us a flavour of what’s to come, Reuben and Henry Smith have offered up languid, blissful and emotive single ‘Drive By Honey’, the album’s gorgeous opening statement. The single’s gestation can be traced back to the bands first life-changing tour of the United States. Supporting prolific musician and producer Skinshape, the band criss-crossed North America while taking time out to record in Los Angeles & New Jersey
The results are startling, with the Smith brothers subtly evolving their signature sound – a nostalgic, wide-eyed and dreamy affair full of gentle nods to psychedelia and ‘60s dream-pop – to incorporate audible nods to languid West Coast rock and heavy blue-eyed soul. The album’s first single, offers a tantalising glimpse of what to expect from It Could Be Today. Featuring Dorey on bass and additional guitar, the song sees Reuben Vaun Smith’s sweet, eyes-closed vocals rise above a languid, lolloping groove, effects-laden side guitar, simmering strings and warm keys. The aural equivalent of heat haze rising from the California Pacific Coast Highway, it’s a sublime song to – as Reuben Vaun Smith sings – “start the story”.
