Twenty years ago, Scott Matthews emerged from the Black Country, challenged the status quo and quickly established himself as one of the most revered singer-songwriters of a generation with his mesmeric and inimitable debut album, Passing Stranger. The album that fearlessly pushed generic boundaries with a unique tapestry of folk, rock, blues and ethnic song-writing, earned Matthews some of the highest accolades in the music industry.
It was 2006 when BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe first held his audience in breathless suspense when he aired Matthews’ debut single, Elusive, for the first time, instantly hailing the emerging artist as ‘an exceptional God’s gift’. This was the catalyst that gained the respect of many fellow artists, prompting tours with Robert Plant, Snow Patrol, Bert Jansch, Foo Fighters, Rufus Wainwright and Tori Amos.
