THE VASELINES

40TH ANNIVERSARY UK TOUR

SATURDAY 6TH MARCH 2027

Doors 19:00 - 22:30 Ends

Happy 40th Anniversary to The Vaselines!

"Wait a minute, didn't The Vaselines break up years ago?"

Yes — The Vaselines broke up in 1989, the same week their debut album Dum Dum was released.

"So they're getting back together again?"

Not quite — The Vaselines reformed in 2008 and went on to release two more albums: Sex With an X on Sub Pop in 2010 and V For Vaselines on their own label Rosary Music in 2014.

"Are they any good?"

Let me tell you everything!

The Vaselines were formed in Glasgow in 1987 by singers/guitarists Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee, soon signing to The Pastels frontman Stephen Pastel’s 53rd & 3rd label.

They released two 12-inch singles, Son of a Gun and Dying For It, along with their debut album Dum Dum.

Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain regularly praised The Vaselines in interviews, with the band later covering Molly’s Lips and Son of a Gun (both included on Incesticide), as well as performing Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for a Sunbeam during their legendary MTV Unplugged appearance — introducing The Vaselines to a worldwide audience.

Although they were relatively unknown outside the UK during their initial run, their connection with Nirvana brought them international recognition, with Cobain famously describing Kelly and McKee as his “favourite songwriters in the whole world”.

In 1991, Eugene joined Nirvana onstage at Reading Festival for a performance of Molly’s Lips. The following year, Sub Pop released The Way of the Vaselines: A Complete History, collecting the band’s work up to that point.

After The Vaselines split, both Eugene and Frances continued making music. Eugene formed Captain America, later renamed Eugenius, releasing two albums, while Frances went on to play with The Painkillers, Suckle, and released her solo album Sunny Moon in 2006.

The Vaselines reunited in 2008 for a charity event supporting Malawi Orphan Support. After enjoying the Glasgow show so much, they decided to continue.

They returned with Sex With an X in 2010 via Sub Pop, followed by V For Vaselines in 2014.

The Vaselines celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2027 with a UK tour.
