In a successful 17-year senior playing career in the game, Packie Bonner made 641 appearances for Celtic, winning 4 Scottish League titles, 3 Scottish Cups and a League Cup between 1978 and 1995.
Jock Stein’s last official signing as Celtic manager, his tally of appearances is a club record for a Celtic goalkeeper, unlikely to ever be equalled and puts him fifth in overall club outings.
He is also Celtic’s most capped player with 80 appearances for the Republic of Ireland. In that capacity he played in two World Cup tournaments and one European Championships in a golden era for the national side. His most memorable moment as an internationalist was when he saved Romanian, Daniel Timofte’s penalty-kick in a shootout at the 1990 World Cup in Italy. That save, coupled with David O’Leary’s successful kick ensured that the Irish made it through to the quarter-finals stage of the tournament at their very first attempt only to narrowly lose to hosts Italy.
Since retiring from playing. Packie has diversified into public speaking, media commentary and presentation as well as continuing to work in the game itself as a representative of UEFA.
He is an engaging conversationalist, who speaks with knowledge and experience and ‘An Evening With Packie Bonner plus Special Guests’ promises to be informative, memorable and enjoyable.
