Eternally vital singer-songwriter and former member of highly influential indie rock outfits Hüsker Dü and Sugar

As one third of Hüsker Dü, Bob Mould was front and centre for the ’80s indie rock revolution. Alongside the likes of Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and fellow Twin Cities denizens The Replacements, Hüsker were card-carrying members of a new revolution that prized artistic integrity and DIY attitude over commercial gain.

With their buzzsaw guitars and the yin-yang of Mould’s vitriol and Grant Hart’s romanticism, Hüsker blew out of the underground with three flawless albums in two years on SST before signing to Warner in 1986. After Hüsker Dü split in 1988, Mould released two solo albums before forming the band Sugar, which leaned into the poppier side of his songwriting on acclaimed albums Copper Blue (1992) and File Under: Easy Listening (1994).

Sugar were short-lived and Mould was back on his own by 1995. As a solo artist, Mould broadened his scope significantly, especially on the electronica-tinged Modulate and Blowoff in the early ’00s. However, he was soon back on familiar territory by 2008, recording The District Line with Fugazi’s Brendan Canty.

Mould worked with renowned music writer Michael Azerrad (author of the defining indie rock bible Our Band Could Be Your Life) on his memoir See A Little Light: The Trail of Rage And Melody, published in 2011. He then assembled a new power trio that recaptured the fuzzed out pop of Sugar, featuring Jon Wurster (Superchunk, The Mountain Goats) on drums and Jason Narducy (Split Single) on bass.

This new Mould crew debuted on Silver Age in 2012 and held strong through an impeccable run of records, including Beauty & Ruin, Patch The Sky and 2019’s Sunshine Rock. Mould was on imperiously furious form for 2020’s Blue Hearts, an angry battle cry against the rise of the far right in America.
