Memory Tapes play the Arches, Glasgow with support from Star Slinger and Air France DJs.

After releasing material under aliases Memory Cassette and Weird Tapes, New Jersey-based musician Dayve Hawk made his first release under the Memory Tapes moniker in 2009.

With his music initially landed with the ‘chillwave’ tag, debut album Seek Music frustrated the (albeit ecstatic) music critics with its lack of defining genre, favouring careful compositions over prevailing trends and taking in synth-pop and funk as well as haunting lyrics, dance-driven rhythms, loops and synths, and the odd sound of a bicycle pump or the squeak of a trainer.

Its first single, Bicycle, allegedly racked up over 1 million Google hits just 24 hours after its internet premiere. With praise following from the likes of Pitchfork, Drowned In Sound and BBC Music, Hawk was also scattering out excellent remixes of Crystal Castles, Everything Everything and Yeasayer.

New album Player Piano will be released in July on Something In Construction (Europe) and Carpark (US).

“…a record of achingly gorgeous dance-pop that captures both the joy of nostalgia and the melancholic sense that we’re grasping for good times increasingly out of reach…” Pitchfork Media on Seek Magic
