Unladylike by Melanie Brown & Anna Patton | UK | 2015 | 38′ | Shorts Competition: The Female Perspective | In 2012, women’s boxing was included in the Olympics for the first time ever, sparking a sudden rise in popular appeal. Lesser known are the fights outside the ring that led to this tipping point. For decades, the pioneers of women’s boxing – banned in the UK until the late 1990s – have faced a barrage of prejudice. Some still carry the bruises.

Bluey by Darlene Johnson | Australia | 2015 | 15′ | Shorts Competition | Bluey, an angry young woman trapped in a life of violence, meets a mystery mentor who could change everything. Bluey is a story of courage, heart and the fight for survival.

Some Dark Place by Cecelia Condit | US | 2016 | 5′ | Shorts Competition: The Female Perspective | In “Some Dark Place,” filmmaker Cecelia Condit explores the dislocations of identity and memory that ageing forces upon us, without losing sight of life’s beauty.

Women in Sink by Iris Zaki | UK | 2015 | 36′ | Shorts Competition: The Female Perspective | At “Fifi’s”, a hair salon owned by a Christian Arab in Haifa, Israel, the director installs a camera over the washing-basin, where she chats with the clients she is shampooing. She thus paints an unexpected choral portrait of this space that provides temporary freedom, where Arab and Jewish women share their differences and a community of views on politics, history and love.

Gardening at night by Shayna Connelly | US | 2016 | 12′ | Shorts Competition: The Female Perspective | The period between knowing death is near and death’s arrival forms an unbearable state of regret, sadness and anticipation for Samantha.
