The first astronomically aligned stone circle in the UK for over 3500 years was built in Sighthill Park in Glasgow in 1979, intended as an educational and visitor attraction, as well as a tribute to Professor Alexander Thom, Dr. Archie Thom, Prof. Archie Roy and Dr. Euan MacKie, experts in archaeoastronomy and prominent staff members of Glasgow University. It was designed by Duncan Lunan and the late John Braithwaite was Technical Supervisor.

The story of the circle’s design and construction is told in Duncan Lunan’s book, “The Stones and the Stars, Building Scotland’s Newest Megalith”, published by Springer in November 2012. In 2012 Glasgow submitted its bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, identifying Sighthill as the proposed site for an athletes village in the case of a successful bid, or accelerated area regeneration, should the bid not be successful. The related Masterplan, prepared by Glasgow City Council, indicated that the stone circle was to be removed as part of their plans for the area.

A campaign to save the stone circle started in November 2012. The response to this campaign has indicated that the stone circle means a great deal to many people and that it is actively used for many reasons including ceremonial and educational purposes, private reflection and memorials. The campaign has sought to raise awareness of the circle as an asset for the existing and future community in Sighthill, and to secure its future as an integral part of the proposed regeneration of the area.

To this end Stuart Braithwaite from Mogwai and Duncan Lunan have programmed a concert to focus attention on the circle. When asked about the campaign Stuart commented:

“I'm enormously proud to be involved in this concert to help save the Sighthill Stone Circle. My late father John was involved in its creation and I know he'd have been incredibly unhappy that they are being threatened. The event promises to be great and I've been really taken aback by the response of so many great artists willing to give their time to support this cause. I hope that it raises awareness of the plight of the stones and plays its part in saving what is a wonderful part of Glasgow's scientific and cultural heritage.”

Performances from Stuart Braithwaite, Aidan Moffat, Eugene Kelly, Emma Pollock, RM Hubbert, Remember Remember and very special guests will take place across two rooms at Platform the award winning multi arts venue in Easterhouse, Glasgow. Duncan Lunan will also speak about the stones and their importance to Sighthill, Glasgow and the country as a whole.
