GNAWA TRANCE FUSION SCOTLAND
Fronted by Moroccan lead singer and guembri player Omar Afif, Gnawa Trance Fusion play a roots fusion of Gnawa blues, psychedelic jazz and afrobeat. Baladinda (wooden xylophone), endongo (thumb piano), violin, krakeb (metal castanets), guitar, drumkit, and the gnawa bass-lute (guembri) unify to create this entrancing world music sound. Gnawa music has a preserved heritage of ritual Sufi poetry and dance. These are performed at entire communal nights of spirituality and healing called Lilas, where audience members can enter trance states.
Afif moved to the small town of Banff in 2008 and started to travel around Scotland, searching out musicians from other traditions. Gnawa Trance Fusion was formed a year ago and is made up of people from Edinburgh, Ghana, Spain, Italy, England, with each musician bringing their own unique influence to the set.
An irresistible celebration of existence, addictive rhythms and chants create a unanimity of heart, mind and soul.
Sankofa Beats brings together performers in Edinburgh who all have a passion for African dance and drumming. They fuse dance traditions learnt on their travels across the continent to create exciting new choreographies - high energy djembe dances, rhythmic gumboot, mesmerising belly dances and more. Sankofa Beats takes the audience on a journey to Africa and transmit their passion through music and dance.
