The Stripped Sessions w/ Maria Doyle Kennedy
FRIDAY 27TH JUNE 2014
Maria is an award-winning and critically acclaimed composer, singer, songwriter, musician, theatre artist, orchestrator and educator from Dublin, Ireland. As an actress she is probably best known recently for her role as Queen Katherine of Aragon in the award winning The Tudors.
Jaw-droppingly beautiful – R2 Magazine 12/07/12
Emotional but never anguished, atmospheric but never laboured – Rolling Stone 2012
A powerful mixture between a folk siren and a punk-diva. She is one of the great voices of Ireland. The Celtic Patti Smith – Nick Joyce Basler Zeitung
The Kennedy voice is a persuasive weapon – Mojo, Sept ‘12
Maria Doyle Kennedy possesses the type of voice most female vocalists would die for as well as having the individualism and courage to push boundaries with her music. Described by Hot Press Magazine as Irelands National Treasure, she is a powerful mixture between a folk siren and a punk-diva. One of the great voices of Ireland.
Maria has spent more than two decades performing all over the world.
Her last three albums have demonstrated her evolving artistry. Sing in 2012 is her most accomplished and accessible work yet, a celebration of “the power of the voice, the sound a group of people can make when lifting their voices together – the human act of singing”. The Storms Are On The Ocean (2011) placed her in the Elizabethan world of haunting folk tales and murder ballads, While 2007’s Mutter was inspired by Chuck Palahniuk’s novel, Diary, about a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
“Playing live gives me more pleasure than almost anything else. Something extra happens when you’re playing live. It’s the best way to share the songs, I think. The expression of them is different and affected by the people who are in the room. You’re sharing the songs with your audience. Singing is the thing, apart from my family, that gives me the most joy in the world. I don’t ever spend a day without singing. I cannot imagine a world without music.”
Good news for local audiences, who now have the opportunity to witness the magic that is created onstage by Maria and her partner in love and music Kieran. A recent performance on the Janice Long’s BBC Radio 2 show left the presenter with ‘goose bumps’.
Maria live will scratch past the flesh and touch the heart of anyone fostering even an ounce of rebellion in their souls.
