Zara McFarlane’s debut album, 2011’s “Until Tomorrow”, came garlanded with rave reviews and a MOBO award nomination for Best Jazz Act, and heralded a major new talent in the world of British jazz.
Her acclaimed follow up “If You Knew Her” (also recorded for Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings label|), deftly combines the intricacies of jazz with a deep soulfulness, melding multiple influences from reggae to pop, folk and blues to the spiritual jazz of Pharoah Sanders.
Her voice is akin to Nina Simone and Roberta Flack and she has something of those singer’s vocal control and emotional authority. Her own songs chart the journey through a woman’s life, songs of love and loss, of broken hearts and moving on. She also performs her own versions of covers such as Junior Murvin’s “Police And Thieves”, Nina Simone’s “Plain Gold Ring”, and Nora Dean “Angie La La”.
With a vibrant stage presence and a dynamic young band, her live performances are not to be missed.
